Do you have time for God?

When thinking about spiritual disciplines, the first thing that always comes to mind is a quiet time. Scripture gives us examples of a quiet time, but doesn’t really tell us details of how to do one.

What: The trick to a quiet time is that it is not necessarily quiet. It is time dedicated to God. This may be time spent in prayer, study of scripture, or simply observing God’s creation. The difficulty is, we have to make time for it, daily. If we don’t, we may find it difficult to put God first in our lives. If you have not spent time with God daily, I can encourage you to use this time to start a study of scripture. Habitforge.com tells us that it takes at least 21 days to form a habit. The book of John is 21 chapters long. Try reading one chapter of John each morning for 21 days and closing with a prayer. You should have formed a habit at the end of this time. After completing John, move on to another book.

When: I always recommend that a quiet time be done first thing in the morning each day. Some will move their schedule 15 minutes back or wake up 15 minutes early. Some people do a 15 minute quiet time, but others spend more time on it. Pray about this, follow God’s lead, and make sure to spend the time for God, not for yourself.

Why: Quiet times can help a man grow closer to God. Using this discipline helps you “discipline” yourself to focus on God each day.
