I just finished reading Porn-Again Christian by Mark Driscoll.  It is the most frank and condemning discussion on pornography that I have ever read. I believe that all leaders should read this. If I could put a copy in the hands of every man I met, I would.

Mark gives a clear examination of the effects of the porn industry on the Christian man, American culture, and women. He opens the booklet with an introduction to the problem of lust in our modern culture. He also explains that this booklet is for men. I have to agree with this. The booklet is not appropriate for a woman to read. Parts of it can be shared, but most should only be shared in discussion with other men.

Throughout the booklet, Mark examines different causes, excuses, and effects of pornography. This examination includes an interview that Dr James Dobson did of Ted Bundy. This is an interview which will shake a porn addict, and many of the rest of us as well. Bundy attributes porn as a major contributor to crime.

The last section of the booklet is an appendix by Justin Holcomb. This appendix looks at sexual slavery, the military, and the human trafficking associated with pornography and prostitution. Please read this even if you don’t read the rest of the booklet. This will change the way to evaluate pornography. The way that these criminals bend these girls into subservience is sickening. This is an amazing view into a world that we hope to never see, but is supported by pornography.

Driscoll makes available knowledge in a straightforward way so that the addict, the leader, and the friend can understand and start the progress toward recovery.

  1. William says:

God gives us a sex drive, He gives us the Heaven of orgasm, He apparently thinks it’s fine for married people to mastrubate, and he puts in men a love for the female image, but if a person is single, and they fantasize sex while pleasuring themselves, suddenly that’s a sin and an addiction?

    Give me a break please!

Give YOURSELF a break, is more like it. In other words, go ahead and enjoy the gift of sex, both alone and with the ones we love!

It’s high time the so-called religious world accepted their own and humankind’s sexuality, GUILT FREE.

Guy’s like Dricscol and Dr. Dobson are sadly naive to think Ted Bundy had credibility. Which in turn ought to make one question both men’s authority and expertise.

Hey guys, Ted Bundy was a manipulative psychopath. Yet you want to believe IN THIS CASE he’s a person that can be trusted to speak the truth?

Sorry to say, but you’ve been played like an accordion.

Enjoy God’s gifts, thank God for how wonderfully designed we are, and stop wringing your hands (no pun intended) over the most natural and pleasant physical experience this side of Eden.

    • Paul S says:

William, I appreciate your opinion on this, though I disagree. The sheer number of women and children who are trafficed by sex traders every day shows the damage that porn and the sex industry does.

I also point you to Jesus’ own teachings. During the sermon on the mount, Jesus addressed Adultery. “You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to desire her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away! It is better to lose one of your members than to have your whole body thrown into hell. If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away! It is better to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go into hell.” (Matthew 5:27-30)

As for sex, it’s great. I love it. I truly enjoy time with my wife. I have also seen the damage that sex outside of marriage can cause. Most abortions are the product of sex outside of marriage (though some abortions are within a marriage). Rape (in or out of marriage) is a product of the twisting of the “gift of sex” that you are talking about. Affairs, incest, homosexuality, and other sexual sins are the exercise of the “gift of sex” outside of marriage. Sin can be, and often is, meeting a legitimate need, but in an illigitimate way, taking God’s plan for the gift and replacing it with our own. Sounds like what the serpent did in the Garden of Eden when talking to Eve, doesn’t it?

We find comments on the topic in Exodus. See Exodus 22:16-17, “If a man seduces a virgin who is not engaged and has sexual relations with her, he must surely endow her to be his wife. If her father refuses to give her to him, he must pay money for the bride price of virgins.” In Exodus 20:17 God tells us, “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

While I recognize your argument against Driscoll and Dobson as a valid opinion(one I do not share), I have to ask if you disagree with Jesus and God? Looking at the above references to this topic, you can see the issue. Sex with anyone other than your wife is lust and sin. If you do not marry the woman you sleep with, you are violating scriptural teaching. That said, we are forgiven for our sin if we repent and accept Jesus as our Savior and Lord.

If anyone is having issues in the battle with lust, please send me an email at paul@hardcore-christian.com I’ve been feeling a lot more pressed on this issue as I see it become more present in our culture, not less. I’m praying for you, I hope I can depend on your prayers as well.

      Until the Whole World Knows,
      Paul
