I read yesterday that .xxx has been approved for use alongside web addresses such as .com and .org. This was a 10 year battle that ended in a loss for the Christian groups and government agencies involved. I also believe it is a loss of all internet users. It is an acceptance and a granting of a rightful place for pornography on the internet. Porn is estimated to be a 2.6-3.9 billion dollar a year business by Adams Media Research. Will this change make pornography more or less accessible on the net? I hope that web browser developers will give users the ability to block this domain suffix, but even if they do, the more tech savvy can easily get around that.

I think it is important for us to realize what the problem with porn is. Matthew 5:27-29 tells us “You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to desire her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away! It is better to lose one of your members than to have your whole body thrown into hell” In these verses. Jesus is telling us that to even look at a woman other than our wife lustfully is to commit adultery. When we look at the women on porn sites, we lust after them. This act is disobedience to God, but it is also disrespectful to our loved ones.

What can we do to fix this problem? There are a ton of programs out there to help us keep porn off our computers, but the industry makes it easier to find every day. Mark Driscol recommends Covenant Eyes. This helps but there is always another source. Cell phones have become little computers now, and they are fully wireless, XXX Church saw this risk and has produced X3Watch to tackle this. Both of these programs send emails to accountability partners that you choose at setup. Accountability partners are the best way to address this temptation. Set up with your brothers to call them when you face this temptation. They will understand, and usually support you in this.

While researching for this post, I found that XXX Church also has a recovery program to help you defeat porn. X3Pure It reminds me of P90X and Insanity. It has a name that is just hardcore. Think about it. If you share with your accountability partners that you are using the program, are you going to be ashamed of the name? Or are you just gonna toss it out there like a grenade?  And not only does the name remind me of the workout programs I mentioned, it is a kind of workout in itself. Think about this. If you work out every day, you can relate. It is a constant battle to get up and conquer the workout for the day. This program is a 30 day program for your soul. If you are battling this temptation, head over and try it out. It can do nothing but help, and it sure can’t hurt. Make sure to admit your defficulties to God and your accountability partner though.

Imagine the freedom after breaking the chains of porn.

Until the whole world knows,

Paul

Update: I thought I would add a note here. Satan showed me how much this topic hurts his fight. It took me over 2 hours to post this. I lost internet connection, the site wouldn’t process the request, then my computer wouldn’t accept input. Never have I had this kind of difficulty before, and not since. It’s just more of a reminder to me f how bad this problem is.

Awesome! Definitely a challenge to be overcome. Even with all kinds of protections, web filters, safe searching, etc… it can still sneak through if you have any presence on the web. A conscious choice must be made so that even when you see it you turn and walk away, you refuse to allow yourself to be drawn into the acts.

Paul, these look great, keep up the good work!

The problem with the .xxx thing is that pornography companies are still allowed to use .com etc. If they were forced to use the .xxx and move from the .com then it would be a great victory for those people trying to combat pornography; but that isn’t the case which makes it a great defeat. Now it will be all that much more accessible and the real problem with it is that you don’t really have to search for it to find it. You could run a search for “biology” and probably get pornography mixed into the results.

As for fighting it from the Christian perspective, it’s tough. There’s no doubt about that and aside from divine deliverance it’s a battle. What I’ve done in my personal battle: Added a filter (K9 Web protection) to every computer that has internet hooked up to it that I have access to. The most important thing though, is confession. This needs to be done with a person you trust. Sit down with them and confess to them your issues. Then pray together and confess it to God and seek forgiveness and repent. Keep that person you trust as your accountability partner; make sure you can call them and pray with them at any given moment.

Step three: Read your bible. This alone is probably the most powerful tool we can use against all of our sins/temptations. When we read the Word it provides us with weapons to use against the enemy and any temptation that might come our way.

Staying in the Word is our stronghold.

Well said. I should have mentioned spending time in the Word as well, as this is the most important part. Thanks for the comments, Doug (Vulture!), they are appreciated.

Excellent post. Pornography is such a lure and challenge. I think it is a profound challenge to Christianity today. It ‘s hard to feel like a Christian when shackled by pornography. Thanks for this post!

It is an almost overwhelming problem. We are going to address this problem in many ways as we find new and old ways to tackle the problem.

To everyone-I want you all to have any tool you need to overcome any temptation which would take your focus away from God. He is the focus, not some naked woman on a page. Would you do it while your father watched you? He is watching you…

  5. […] I equate watching pornography and “self-indulgence” or masturbation to the same degree as adultery. In your heart you are gaining pleasure from a video or thought that is not your wife or spouse. It makes me feel as if I, as a woman, or as your wife that I am not enough. If you have to seek it somewhere else when you have a full-bodied and willing loving woman in your bed why do it? Same with women. Men are not the only culprits. Below are a few verses and an excerpt from an article. There is also a blog that I have been reading and it is really interesting and he also wrote on this subject…Hardcore Christian Men […]

I agree with you in the most part. One area where I have difficulty is masturbation. I believe it is fine as long as it is thought of your spouse. A reason I can see for this is extended periods of geographical separation. Mark Driscoll talked a bit on this subject at a Song of Solomon conference I went to back in 2009. I recommend that anyone who is able to go to one of these conferences goes. It will give you a new way to look at this book of scripture and sex in general.
