Freedom From Religion?

I was listening to Casting Crowns this morning and heard the song “While you were sleeping” and it really made me think. As men, we are the providers, protectors, and leaders of our homes, but also of our nation. And we aren’t doing a great job leading our nation. One of the lines of the song says “Bethlehem, you’ll go down in history, as a city with no room for its king.” In the modern Church, we look at Bethlehem poorly for having Mary stay in the stable. It is hard for us to imagine a pregnant woman having to stay in the barn out back. However, even while looking at the innkeeper of Bethlehem, we as Americans stand strong in our claims to independence and freedoms. One of these freedoms has been driven down our throats to the point that our faith has been relegated to the stable, out of sight out of mind.

Prayer has been removed from the classroom, the nation’s capital, and even most homes. America was founded on the principles of Christianity, but with the government separate. This was intended to stop the government from making church a controlled entity. However, in recent years it has gone far from this. Freedom of religion is now freedom from religion. It’s a time when 86% of Americans claim Christianity, but only about 20% attend service or other Christian fellowship regularly. Islam is the fastest growing religion in America and the world. On the national day of prayer, Franklin Graham (Billy Graham’s son) was not allowed to pray on the White House steps, but a few months later, Muslim clerics were invited to, and participated with the president in, the first National Day of Muslim Prayer. Many schools don’t say the pledge of allegiance because it had the words, “under God”, and even more don’t require students to say it. Christians are publically labeled as hateful, violent people by the media and the government. I heard a quote from Franklin Graham saying that within our lifetime it would likely be illegal to pray in public.

All of these things are happening while we claim to be leading America. We aren’t leading America. Men stand up and Man Up! You want to be a man; then stand behind what you believe. Don’t let others tell you to be quiet and non-offensive. Scripture tells us that our very belief will offend. John 15:18-19 tells us, “If the world hates you, be aware that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, the world would love you as its own. However, because you do not belong to the world, but I chose you out of the world, for this reason the world hates you.” For an even more clear statement, simply look to 2 Timothy 3:12, “Now in fact all who want to live godly lives in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

Jesus tells us we will be persecuted. The Apostles taught that we would be persecuted. All but one of the Apostles was martyred. Is this what you signed up for? If persecution and death drive you away from God, then spend some serious time in the Word and in prayer, for it will come. What defines you as a man is how you respond to the persecution. Christ suffered under the whips of persecution for you; will you do the same for him? If you want to be a man, as Christ calls you to, you must accept your cross and carry it for Him.

Christian Men have forgotten this. American men don’t see the persecution that occurs around the world. Spend a few minutes at persecution.org if you doubt its presence in this world. If Christian Men do not stand up to lead and protect our family and nation, the Americas will be a fourth column on that site before long. Our children already are, with abortion not only legal, but supported by the government.

As the song I mentioned earlier says, “America, will we go down in history, as a nation with no room for its king?” It’s time for us to stand up and cry out in a strong voice, “I will not bend! I will not break! Jesus is the Lord!”

Stop lying down and taking the beating silently. Proclaim Him to all. “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19)

Until the Whole World Knows,

 Paul
